The Tea Act
The Tea Act was passed by British Parliament on May 10, 1773. This was the last movement that would push the colonists to prepare for the Revolutionary War. The Act was intended to help the East India Company, which was financially burdened with 18,000,000 pounds of unsold tea. The tea was sent to the colonies at a very cheap price. The Townshend Acts were still in place, which made the colonies think the British were adding more taxes. The local colonial merchants took a hit by the British sales. Colonists in New York and Philadelphia turned ships back to Britain . In Boston, the colonists refused to unload the British tea, so Britain didn't allow the ships to leave the Boston Harbor. The Patriots dumped about 90,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor. There were no British attempts to stop them. This event angered both the colonists and the British. This led to the closing of the Boston Harbor. The Intolerable Acts followed to punish the colonists.
