The Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765. This tax required the colonists to pay a tax on any type of printed paper used. Newspapers, legal documents, playing cards, and writing paper that was used everyday. Money collected was used to help pay for the expenses for the British troops guarding the American side of the Appalachian Mountains. The Stamp Act was viewed by the colonists as a way for the British to tax the colonies without their permission. Allowing this tax opened up a new world of taxes on the colonies. Although the actual cost of the Stamp Act was quite small, it was the principle that offended the colonies.
